FOCUS QUESTION:
- Do you believe humans will ever reach a point where there is nothing new left to invent?
excerpt FROM PUnch MAgazine (1899)
The 1899 edition of Punch Magazine focused on the upcoming 20th century. In the passage to the right, a boy explains to a genius why there is no longer any need for patent clerks*. The passage does not represent a conversation that actually happened. Rather, it is meant to be a clever way to describe society in 1899.
*In short, a patent clerk (or patent examiner) is a government employee who determines if an invention is an original idea and, thus, the inventor deserves credit for creating it. |
